NASA confirms DART changed an asteroid’s motion

NASA’s DART mission changed Dimorphos’s orbit. Hubble captured debris from the impact.

After DART struck Dimorphos, astronomers measured how long the smaller asteroid took to orbit Didymos. The period had been 11 hours 55 minutes. It was now 11 hours 23 minutes. The measurement carried uncertainty of approximately two minutes.

Before the encounter, NASA set a minimum successful change of 73 seconds. The measured change exceeded that benchmark by more than 25 times.

What the team is studying next

Observatories continue to refine the orbit measurement. Researchers are also studying the debris pushed into space and how its recoil contributed to the change.

Understanding that effect requires more information about the asteroid’s surface and strength. Neither Dimorphos nor Didymos poses a hazard to Earth.

a YouTube video?

Open the YouTube video in Chrome and choose Summarize in Clico. When captions are available, open Transcript to read them and use their timestamps to revisit the recording. Ask for study notes from a lecture or each speaker’s position in an interview. Check quotations against the video.

Expand relevant comments before including them. Votes and a few visible replies do not establish a community consensus. When you are comparing recommendations, separate what someone tried from what they merely suggested.
